The mission of the placement

The mission of the sheltered housing Archa Třinec is to provide people with mental illness with individual support to develop the skills and abilities that will enable them to integrate into society as much as possible, or to live independently in a normal environment according to their abilities and their own ideas. The service offers clients all-year-round housing and is open to both women and men, each of whom has their own one-bed flat.

Activities

Your main activity will be to support and assist clients, who live and spend most of their time in the center during the daily activities such as cleaning their homes, cooking, doing laundry, ironing, dusting or shopping. The clients love to cook, so you can also teach them some recipes from your home.

You can come up with some ideas for leisure time activities and assist clients during their free time by e.g. walking around the neighborhood, playing board games, organizing a creative workshop, visiting a café, library, cinema, theater or just talking with them. Your task will also help clients to get ready for departure and accompany them to follow-up services (socio-therapeutic workshops) and services (post office, hairdresser, shop etc.) by supporting travel, decision-making and the maintenance of social contact.

During the whole period of voluntary service, you will cooperate with social workers in the center. You are welcome to make a presentation for clients about your interest, culture and traditions or come up with different ideas for activities related to the mission of service.

Events throughout the year:

The sheltered housing Archa Třinec participates in public events such as Heart of Europe, Soup on the pavement and others. They would like to help clients to integrate them more in the local community and build relationships with peers. As a volunteer, you will also participate in these activities.

By participating in this project you will learn specifics of the sheltered housing, as well the specifics of this target group and you will learn the concrete methods of how to work with adults with disabilities.

Growing through challenges:

  • Neither the center users nor the workers speak a foreign language. Therefore, you have to be prepared that in the first week you will communicate by your hands and feet or invent other communication techniques such as using pictures or drawing.
  • There may be times when clients do not want to cooperate and may even be rude.
