The mission of the placement:

The mission of the Centre is to provide long-term and regular support to people with disabilities by practicing working and social skills. The support emerges from personal needs and the possibilities of service users, and it is aimed at developing self-sufficiency and skills and at increasing the chance of being employed.

Activities:

Your task will be to support service users in the workshops and assist them during work in therapeutic workshops. You will help them with various creative activities such as knitting, crochet and sewing. You can work with different kinds of materials - ceramics, paper, cloth, or wood. It is a good chance to learn new creative techniques.

You will accompany centre users during afternoon activities and leisure time activities, including sport and cultural activities, trips, and travels, participating in various events, celebrations, and meetings (Christmas, Easter, Mother’s Day etc). You will have the opportunity to lead conversations with the centre users, playing memory games with them or reading stories during morning devotions.

Events throughout the year:

Because the centre provides social-therapeutic workshops, they organise many exhibitions of their products and paintings. The placement closely cooperates with the hospital in Třinec. Your task will also be to help with preparing the place for exhibitions and providing support for the presentation of centre users’ products. The Centre also organises exhibitions during the week of social services in the Czech Republic, where the public can come visit them to their workshop and workplace in Český Těšín.

Growing through challenges:

The main challenge is the language and communication barrier with people with mental disabilities. Be prepared that during the first weeks you will have to communicate using your hands and feet.
You will gain a special knowledge for working with people with disabilities and you will learn task-oriented, person-oriented and systematic approaches.
