The mission of the placement:

Effatha socio-therapeutic workshop is a place for adults with mental and multiple disabilities who can spend their day actively to gain and maintain work habits and skills. The Centre users can also develop social skills and become more independent in daily activities.

Activities:

Effatha service users and staff produce various things such as small gifts items, decorative items, ceramics and others. You will support and assist people during therapeutic activities for instance: pottery, workshop (encaustic art,  - the production of buttons, candles and soap), textile workshop, wood workshop. 

You will assist and accompany Centre users during various activities and events such as: gardening, cooking, memory training, relaxation activities and others. You will also assist in preparing materials and the workspace, and scheduling of the work for participants.  You will also work in cooperation with social workers.

Preferred personal traits:

  • It would be a benefit if you are interested in handcraft
  • Creativity
  • A positive attitude
  • An interest in helping others

Events throughout the year:

With the work with Centre users, a volunteer can learn many communication techniques such as Makaton, global reading method or pictograms. The Effatha Centre also participates in various public events, where they present their workshop products. 

The Centre organises special trips and tours for the service users such as: walking in nature or in the mountains or visiting monuments. Staff prepare educational sessions concerning finance, health care, ethics, law and others.

Growing through challenges:

  • Neither the Centre users nor the workers speak a foreign language. Therefore, a volunteer has to be prepared that in the first week you will communicate by your hands and feet or invent other communication techniques such as using pictures or drawing.
