The mission of the placement

The facility provides a range of activities for children and youth from 6 to 15 years of age that are living in or are threatened by unfavorable social conditions such as difficulties in school, conflicts in the family, bullying, aggressive behavior and difficulty to deal with the emotions and incapability of inclusion into society.  The service offers children and young people a safe environment to deal with their individual situations and motivates them to positive change and take a more responsible approach to life. Children visit the low-threshold facility mainly in the afternoons after school.

Activities

You will work directly with children and young people in a low-threshold facility, but you will also reach out to the clients outside during the streetwork. You will work closely with a team of social workers and together you will create a weekly activity plan for clients.

One of your roles will be to organize discussions and presentations to educate children and young people on various topics such as finance, drugs, alcohol, social networks, health and safety, healthy relationships, etc. You will spend time with clients and devise different ways of leisure activities based on their interest or wishes (playing board games, playstation, football and other sports activities, cooking and baking etc.) As the clients love creative workshops, you  will make seasonal decorations with them. You'll be helping them with their homework or teaching them a foreign language. The center also often organizes special events such as sleepovers, visiting the cinema or summer barbeque.

You are more than welcome to take part in organizing activities based on your own talents or interest. Moreover, it would be appreciated to tell clients more about your country and traditions, as they usually don’t have the opportunity to travel.

Preferred personal traits:

  • Empathy
  • Ability to find a proper ways of communication
  • Patiency
  • Teamwork
  • Independence
  • Respect project rules
  • Be willing to learn Czech language

Events throughout the year:

The low-threshold center participates in various events, mostly in seasonal markets to present the service itself. They also regularly visit the local school, where they meet students to inform them about the service in the case that there is someone who needs the help. As a volunteer, you will participate in mentioned activities.

During your service, you will learn how to work with children and young people and learn special methods and techniques for working with them. What's more, you can become a good role model for them and help them to make a positive change in their lives or for the future.

Growing through challenges:

  • Communication with children and young people is very important, but unfortunately only a few clients speak english.  You have to be motivated to learn the Czech language.
  • The center is located in a small village that is far from the big cities. Be prepared for the fact that you will probably live alone or with a visiting family.  There are more volunteers in this location, whom you can visit. :-)
  • As you will  be working with teenagers, be prepared for them to be unmotivated to participate in activities or sometimes they can be even rude. The clients are mostly gender-balanced, but sometimes there are more boys in the center. You have to be prepared to adapt quickly to the situation because you never know how many clients will arrive that day.
