The mission of the placement:

The mission of this placement is to contribute to the lives of the service users so that they can learn to live a normal life, even with mental illness and to positively affect the way society views people with mental illness.

Activities:

Your main activities will be to participate in numerous activities organized by the centre. During the first months, you will be guided through all the activities in the centre: morning meetings where clients share their feelings, different themed clubs (literature, geography, music) and workshops, sport activities, group therapy with a psychiatrist, activities with horses, memory training exercises, therapy workshops such as ceramics and other forms of art therapy.

After you have got to know the centre a little bit, you will be given an ‘open space’ for the realisation of a long term or one-off activity of your choice for the Centre users, depending on your skills and gifts. With time, you will be given more responsibility. You will also accompany users to various exhibitions, fairs and on trips.

Preferred personal traits:

  • Being proactive in the work with people and in learning the Czech language
  • Taking responsibility
  • Ability to work in team but also independently
  • Patient
  • Empathetic

Events throughout the year:

Throughout the whole year, Centre staff have as a main aim to socialise the Centre users by taking them for various trips (cinema, walks, excursions, bowling, hikes, pools etc.) and events, so there will be a lot of space for you to get to know the surroundings of Třinec and sometimes to travel even further away. New ideas which you bring in are always welcome!

Growing through challenges:

The challenges you may face and grow through are:

  • Facing prejudice about people with mental illness – you will gain more knowledge about the illnesses, and get to know peoples’ humour, emotionality and energy
  • Some Centre users may be more emotional or even experience psychosis – you will learn how to be patient and what kind of approach to have towards them
  • Cultural and language barriers – learning Czech ‘on the go’,
  • Keeping an open mind
