The mission of the placement:

The mission of the senior home is to provide residential services to seniors, whose health and social situation requires help from another person. The workers support the residents so that every client can live their life with dignity and contentment. The centre also supports the residents to maintain self-sufficiency in their everyday activities at as high a level as possible.

Activities:

Your main activity will be to help the residents with activities during the day This doesn’t differ from the ordinary day of an elderly person at home: getting up, hygiene, breakfast, morning programme, lunch, afternoon programme, dinner, hygiene, sleep. You will assist and support them during activation activities, physical and breathing exercises. You will also help the residents with memory and musical activities. Sometimes, the activities can be similar to “grandparent-grandchild” relationship - you can read books and magazines for the residents, listen to music, TV or radio with them, talk to them, listen to their life stories and learn from them. The residents love coffee and there is a “traveling café” called ‘Labuška café’. There is no better way to connect with the residents than serve them coffee and say a nice word to them. There will be a space for you to create mini-projects, events and activities for the residents using your gifts and talents.

Preferred personal traits:

  • Having a good relationship with seniors
  • Proactive
  • Responsible
  • Tolerant
  • Patient
  • Careful
  • Open to learn new things and the Czech language
  • Empathy to understand the needs of the residents

Events throughout the year:

The events throughout the year happen according to the seasons - Christmas, Easter, Summer holidays etc. Sometimes you will accompany residents to events that will be organized by the village for the public. You will also have the opportunity to go see life in a senior house that is located nearby.

Growing through challenges:

The challenges you may face and grow through them are:

  • Learning basic communication in the Czech language as soon as possible, because most residents don’t use English - learning Czech ‘on the go’ and finding new ways to communicate
  • Listening to talkative residents, who sometimes express negative views - patience, understanding, learning to seek for good things in the client’s stories.
  • Prejudices about work with the elderly people - gaining realistic point of view of elderly people in need of support.
