The mission of the placement:

The mission of Betezda is to provide residential social service to adult people with mental or combined disabilities and to support and help them in everyday life. The Centre also tries to develop and maintain the skills and abilities of the service users according to their individual needs.

Activities:

Your main activity will be to help the service users with specific tasks depending on their needs and to participate in various trips, e.g. to ZOO or to swimming pool. Once a week you will also participate in morning devotions and, depending on your skills and talent, you can play a musical instrument or sing with others. One of the most important activities – and probably the biggest challenge – will be having conversations with the clients or just listening to them: they really need it. You will also spend time with individual clients, even if some of them don’t speak English and some of them don’t speak at all. Besides, you can help the clients with cooking or prepare snacks for them. You will also be given space for your own mini-project based on creative activities or similar.

Preferred personal traits:

  • Patience
  • Willingness to listen to clients’ monologues
  • Easygoingness
  • Proactive approach in learning Czech language
  • Responsibility
  • Ability to work independently
  • Empathy
  • Tolerance

Events throughout the year:

Events throughout the year are organized according to seasons - Christmas, Easter, summer holidays etc. Sometimes you will accompany clients to public events organized in the village. You will also have the opportunity to become familiar with the life in a senior house located nearby.

Growing through challenges:

The challenges you may face and grow through are:

  • Learning basic Czech communication skills as soon as possible, as some clients don’t speak English. Learning Czech language „on the go“ and looking for new ways to communicate.
  • Changing your daily schedule – you will often work in the afternoon, so you will need to get used to a new timetable.
  • Listening to talkative clients – it needs patience, understanding and emotional resilience.
