The mission of the placement:

The mission of the low threshold facility Pohoda is to pursue positive change in the lifestyle of the children and young people, who find themselves in an unfavourable life situation.

Activities:

Your main activities will be to be in contact with users of the centre through different types of resources and methods for spending leisure time - it can be playing board games, arts and crafts, table football, table hockey, billiards, puzzles etc. You will be creating leisure activities and programmes on your own or with the team of workers: these can be various quizzes, sport tournaments, special holiday events, cooking clubs, grill parties or other activities you will suggest and implement according to your gifts and talents.

When you are able to communicate in the Czech language a little, you will help children with their school work, for example homework or school subjects which they have problems with. You will help them create presentations or other school papers on a given topic. You will also have an opportunity to participate in preventive discussions and you can also propose your own topics to discuss and organise them (e.g.,the importance of brushing your teeth, how to behave in public places, smoking). During all of these activities, you will build a friendly relationship with the children & young people and become their ‘buddy’.

Events throughout the year:

There are many events which happen throughout the whole year and they are specific for each season. We taking the young people from the centre for various trips around the city - to the pool, the park, “the sea of Karviná”. Or sometimes we go for trips in different cities – the zoo or dinopark in Ostrava, the fish house in Chotěbuz. There are really very many possibilities. The challenges you may face and grow through are:

Overcoming prejudices about Roma people and other socially excluded people – how to keep an open mind, you will get to know their culture, humour, energy
Learning basic communication in the Czech language as soon as possible, because the Centre users don’t normally use English - learning the Czech language ‘on the go’ and finding new ways to communicate
changing your daily schedule - you will work usually in the afternoon, so you will need to get used to a new ‘timetable’
